If you’re suffering from varicose veins or spider veins, it’s time to take action. Regardless of whether or not you’re experiencing painful symptoms, varicose veins are still dangerous. While cosmetic concerns can reduce self-confidence, risks and complications of untreated varicose veins are far more serious. To make sure you’re healthy and staying safe, it’s important to see a vein specialist. Glenview residents can easily make an appointment for a consultation with Illinois Vein Specialists for fast, pain-free treatments. Our office is located in the Chicagoland area, so you don’t have to travel far for outstanding treatment.
As we mentioned, varicose veins treatment is far more than a cosmetic correction. Vascular disease affects one third of the U.S. population—many of whom suffer from varicose veins. When left untreated, you put yourself at risk for developing serious, sometimes fatal, complications. Since only about 1 out of every 25 people actually seek treatment, we want to break the stigma regarding varicose veins in hopes that it encourages more people to address the underlying issues.
Varicose veins are a telltale sign that your body’s circulation is no longer working efficiently in a certain area. The purple, bulging appearance occurs due to an accumulation of blood pooling in the affected area. This occurs because of a malfunctioning valve and subsequent high vein pressure. While many people only experience cosmetic symptoms, others are plagued with ongoing pain, fatigue, and moderate to severe swelling. Regardless of what type of symptoms you experience, prolonging the treatment of varicose veins increases your risk of developing edemas, venous ulcers, and deep vein thrombosis (DVT)—a potentially fatal occurrence. The best way to make sure that you stay healthy and avoid serious complications is to seek treatment from an experienced, board-certified physician. As a local leader in modern treatment options, Illinois Vein Specialists performs non-invasive therapies for vein disease. We utilize Endovenous Laser Treatment for varicose veins and Sclerotherapy or Intense Pulse Light therapy for spider veins.
Endovenous Laser Treatment, commonly referred to as EVLT works by delivering a unique wavelength of laser energy to a targeted area. This wavelength acts as a stimulating agent that causes the vein to close. As soon as the vein closes, your body will reabsorb it into your system and naturally re-route your blood flow to other, healthier veins. Since EVLT is done on a localized area, no healthy veins are affected by the treatment. As an added benefit, EVLT is non-invasive and requires only a small amount of local analgesia. While some patients experience a slight discomfort, the treatment is virtually pain free. As soon as the treatment is over, the healing begins, and you can walk out of the office ready to go about your day.
While EVLT is used to treat varicose veins, Sclerotherapy is primarily used on deep spider veins. This treatment is done by a board-certified physician who injects a sclerosing agent into the affected vein. This, in turn, causes inflammation and eventual destruction of the lining of the blood vessel. When the lining starts to deteriorate, the rest of the vein begins to harden and close. Once closed, your body reabsorbs the vein and re-routes your blood flow. While the cosmetic effects of this aren’t immediate, your spider veins will slowly begin to disappear. Over time, they will fade completely.
If you have surface level spider veins that need treatment, Intense Pulse Light Therapy (IPL) is the preferred treatment method. During this treatment, your board-certified physician will use a combination of targeted light and controlled heat delivered through a pulsating technique. This combination helps to break down and dissolve the affected veins, thus banishing them from your skin.
We believe that many people avoid treatment due to misconceptions about the process. In the past, you had to undergo painful vein stripping procedures that provided no substantial results and required long recovery periods. Our physicians never use stripping treatments and instead, rely on EVLT, Sclerotherapy, and IPL. These modern treatment options are pain-free and require almost no recovery time. As soon as you leave your appointment, the healing begins. With high success rates, there’s no reason to keep putting off treatment for your varicose or spider veins. If you have any questions about these procedures, or would like to schedule a consultation, contact our Glenview vein specialist today.
