Causes and Symptoms of Varicose Veins

VARICOSE VEINS ARE WIDELY UNDER-TREATED AND GENERALLY MISUNDERSTOOD.
THESE ARE THE PRIMARY CAUSES OF VARICOSE VEINS AND VEIN DISEASE:

HEREDITY

The primary cause of varicose veins is heredity, accounting for near 80% of cases. If your grandparents and parents and/or other relatives have suffered from varicose veins, you are very likely to have the disease as well.

PREGNANCY

There is a clear relationship between multiple pregnancies, hormones, and vein disease. Many believe that a woman should wait until she has had all her planned babies before seeking relief, that the same veins, once treated, can be reinjured. Neither of these things is true. During the repair process, the damaged veins disappear altogether and are absorbed by the body. If varicosities are properly treated, a recurrence of the same varicose vein is virtually impossible.

LIFESTYLE

Vein disease is also related to years of standing without the benefit of support hose, obesity, and injury.

AGE

Aging causes wear and tear on vein valves that regulate blood flow. Patients perceive vein disease to be more common as they age because the disease has had longer to make its symptoms known, has become more advanced, and done more damage.

Our oldest patient is 96 years old. He has been successfully treated and no longer has pain or ulcers. You're never too old to get care.

THE SYMPTOMS OF VEIN DISEASE ARE MANY AND MAY PRESENT TOGETHER OR ALONE:

SPIDER VEINS

Obvious signs like varicose veins and the less serious spider veins—especially in the lower legs and ankles.

LEG SWELLING

Many patients believe or have been told that they have leg or ankle swelling for other reasons. For 1/3 of these people it may not be true.

ACHY LEGS

Tired, achy legs, heaviness, fatigue, leg cramps are also very commonly overlooked.

LEG RASHES

Scaly, itchy rashes and thickening of the skin, particularly near the ankles and calves.

NON-HEALING WOUNDS

Slow or non-healing wounds on the legs, open sores near the ankels and leg ulcerations are common and more severe symptoms of vein disease.

SKIN DISCOLORATION

Darkening of the skin on the legs, near the ankles and calves.

RESTLESS LEG SYNDROME

Restless legs are very common particularly at night while sleeping - keep you up tossing and turning at night.

HAIR LOSS

Loss of hair in the lower legs, ankles and calves.
